Introduction to Gynecology
Gynecology is the medical field that focuses on the health of the female reproductive system. This includes the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and breasts. Gynecologists are doctors who specialize in this area and provide care ranging from routine check-ups to more complex medical procedures.
Common Gynecological Conditions
- Menstrual Disorders: These include conditions like dysmenorrhea (painful periods), amenorrhea (absence of periods), and menorrhagia (heavy periods).
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS): A hormonal disorder causing enlarged ovaries with small cysts.
- Endometriosis: A condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus grows outside the uterus, causing pain and potentially affecting fertility.
- Fibroids: Non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause heavy bleeding and pain.
- STIs: Infections transmitted through sexual contact, such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and HPV.
